To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
In 1942, my Grandfather, who was living in Southern France, joined the
French Underground. The Allies would airdrop supplies to the Maquis,
and my grandfather, received in one of these shipments a radio that was
the height of American technology and miniaturization at the time. It's
about 12" X 5" X 5" with a grey metal casing and a minimum of dials (one
for frequency and one for volume). It came with headphones, and three
modules that plug into one end. One module would convert it to shortwave
one to AM and one to FM. This was way before microchips and the radio
weighs at least 5 pounds. It has 5 vacuum tubes in it AND IT STILL WORKS!
We had to have it repaired recently, and the electronics repairman who
did the work put a transformer on it to keep it from ruining the tubes again.
Anyway, we've been able to pick up broadcasts from all over the world with it.
It's REALLY neat.
Anyway, when Grandpa immigrated to the U.S., he brought the radio with him
and kept it all these years. He gave it to my brother for his 10th birthday
last August. I just thought it was a neat story.

I was starting to look for an HT for 1200 MHz, and found these choices:
ICOM 12GAT (2AT size class) $444 discounted to $419 at C-COM
Yeasu FT911 $469
Standard 628A (440 and 1200) $570
ICOM X2A (440 and 1200) $495 (discounted to $330) at C-COM,
470 (discounted to $305) at AES
with an ICOM $130 discount coupon -- offer through March.
So the X2A looks interesting. But I haven't seen it, or heard whether
it is a competent radio. Can anyone say?

The X2A looks just like the W2A or 2SRA. It has all the normal bells and
whistles that modern HT have. I seriously thought about this radio for
a while but at the time it was $500. $305 is an incredible price for a
dual band radio, especially one with 1.2GHz. I would love to get one
but now I live in an area that doesn't have 1.2 activity.

The TH-28A works especially well with other TH-28A, so it would make sense
that if your friends have chosen it, it would synergize well with them.
For example, each member of your informal group can have an ID code, and you
can send alphanumeric messages to each other or to the group, whether you are
at the radio or not.
You can have a group DTMF squelch break code, so you can monitor a frequency
without the radio making a noise unless someone keys up and sends the DTMF
squelch break code.
Other niceties include:
- 6 character alphanumeric description for each of 20 programmable channels
(e.g. the repeaters show up by name/location rather than 146.999)
- It can be modified to pickup 360 to 520 Mhz, so alot of police stuff can
be found (and you can scan the set of non-scan-locked-out programmed channls)
(the mod, though of little use, expands the RX+TX range from 136 to 170 Mhz)
- It can pick up aircraft at 118-136 using AM.
- Since it receives 440 Mhz, you can use it for split band operation (e.g.
transmit on 2M, recieve on 440 band) with no problems.
- It's a cute little easy to carry package with a good reciever.
- It has several scan modes, a clock with alarm, a lots of options to add on
later.
- It has a bazillion functions.
Bad things about the radio:
- It is pricey-er than the bare bones models.
- The channel scan mode is too slow (about 2 or 3 channels a second)
- It has a bazillion functions.
I like mine.

Subject: SMALL 2m HT wanted for my wife...
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
I've just convinced my wife that she needs a radio! Yippee! :-)
I have an Yaesu FT-530, but don't ever use the 440 here in this part
of the world, so would like to buy a simple, _small_ 2m radio.
I've seen the Kenwood TH-28A, and like the size. Are there any other
radios out that this small? I know that Yaesu just came out with a
_real_ small one, but it can't output more than about 2.5 watts (I
could be wrong--it's been a while since I read the ad).
Any ideas? Suggestions? Testimonials? :-)
Thanx,
Curtis

Subject: Variable capacitors... help!
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
I'm trying to put together an antenna tuner and I need
the following. Could someone please point me to a source
for these parts:
200-pf transmitting variable capacitor with plate spacing
of 0.075 inch or greater (J.W. Miller Co. #2150)
200-pf dual-section variable capacitor, same plate
spacing as above (J.W. Miller Co. #2151)
25-uH minimum inductance, rotary inductor, (E.F. Johnson
#229-203)
I have called all over the place trying to find a place
that has these things with no luck. Geeeze, I can't
even find J.W. Miller Co.'s phone number in Compton,
CA.
Any help with this stuff would be GREATLY appreciated!!

I have a FT107 and a FT707. I am looking for any accessories which go with
these two radios, especially the antenna tuners, and the mobile mounting
bracket for the 707. Thanks.
