  39. In 1942, my Grandfather, who was living in Southern France, joined the
  40. French Underground.  The Allies would airdrop supplies to the Maquis,
  41. and my grandfather, received in one of these shipments a radio that was
  42. the height of American technology and miniaturization at the time.  It's
  43. about 12" X 5" X 5" with a grey metal casing and a minimum of dials (one
  44. for frequency and one for volume).  It came with headphones, and three
  45. modules that plug into one end.  One module would convert it to shortwave
  46. one to AM and one to FM.  This was way before microchips and the radio
  47. weighs at least 5 pounds.  It has 5 vacuum tubes in it AND IT STILL WORKS!
  48. We had to have it repaired recently, and the electronics repairman who
  49. did the work put a transformer on it to keep it from ruining the tubes again.
  50. Anyway, we've been able to pick up broadcasts from all over the world with it.
  51. It's REALLY neat.

  53. Anyway, when Grandpa immigrated to the U.S., he brought the radio with him
  54. and kept it all these years.  He gave it to my brother for his 10th birthday
  55. last August.  I just thought it was a neat story.

  110. The X2A looks just like the W2A or 2SRA.  It has all the normal bells and
  111. whistles that modern HT have.  I seriously thought about this radio for
  112. a while but at the time it was $500.  $305 is an incredible price for a
  113. dual band radio, especially one with 1.2GHz.  I would love to get one
  114. but now I live in an area that doesn't have 1.2 activity.

  176. The TH-28A works especially well with other TH-28A, so it would make sense
  177. that if your friends have chosen it, it would synergize well with them.

  179. For example, each member of your informal group can have an ID code, and you
  180. can send alphanumeric messages to each other or to the group, whether you are
  181. at the radio or not.

  183. You can have a group DTMF squelch break code, so you can monitor a frequency
  184. without the radio making a noise unless someone keys up and sends the DTMF
  185. squelch break code.

  188. Other niceties include:
  189.   - 6 character alphanumeric description for each of 20 programmable channels
  190.     (e.g. the repeaters show up by name/location rather than 146.999)
  191.   - It can be modified to pickup 360 to 520 Mhz, so alot of police stuff can
  192.      be found (and you can scan the set of non-scan-locked-out programmed channls)
  193.      (the mod, though of little use, expands the RX+TX range from 136 to 170 Mhz)
  194.   - It can pick up aircraft at 118-136 using AM.
  195.   - Since it receives 440 Mhz, you can use it for split band operation (e.g.
  196.      transmit on 2M, recieve on 440 band) with no problems.
  197.   - It's a cute little easy to carry package with a good reciever.
  198.   - It has several scan modes, a clock with alarm, a lots of options to add on
  199.      later.
  200.   - It has a bazillion functions.
  201.  
  202. Bad things about the radio:
  203.  
  204.   - It is pricey-er than the bare bones models.
  205.   - The channel scan mode is too slow (about 2 or 3 channels a second)
  206.   - It has a bazillion functions.

  251. I have an Yaesu FT-530, but don't ever use the 440 here in this part
  252. of the world, so would like to buy a simple, _small_ 2m radio.

  254. I've seen the Kenwood TH-28A, and like the size.  Are there any other
  255. radios out that this small?  I know that Yaesu just came out with a
  256. _real_ small one, but it can't output more than about 2.5 watts (I
  257. could be wrong--it's been a while since I read the ad).
